Commentary & Reflection

The central idea of my concentration is fairy tales re imagined. I started out with the classics (Snow White, Rapunzel, Sleeping Beauty and so on) and then moved from there to the villains of the stories. In the beginning, the characters were more personal, and lighter, especially the first two. Towards the end, the colors become darker, and the last four pieces, as villains, have their faces smeared out because they are the unwanted ones in the stories. Most of the focus, in both the series and the stories is on the heroes and heroines.

AP Score: 3
3.C An idea for a concentration is presented, and some original ideas or attempts at innovation with materials and techniques seem to be emerging.
3.E Some development is evident, but only a moderate understanding and superficial application of design principles are demonstrated.

Reflection: Overall, this concentration was quite fun. I enjoyed keeping a style for multiple pieces, which is something I don't usually like to do. I love stories, so it was a blast trying to make art out of them. However, it became pretty hard to come up with ideas without too much repetition, because many of these stories have the same basic outline. The progression in particular was difficult for the same reasons.

Improved

For this one, I adjusted the colors quite a bit, focusing on making them brighter. In the previous scan, the colors were a little too grey, which is not how the ocean/mermaids should feel. I added a little bit shading and highlights as well throughout the piece. Although it's not necessarily significant changes, it is what the piece needed. I wasn't here for the critique, so please tell me what y'all think about these changes.

Midseries Concentration

 Little Mermaid
 Hidden

Snow White

The central idea of my concentration is fairy tales re-imagined. I want it to begin with the classic fairy tales that we all know, and then move to international fairy tales, and then maybe I can make up my own.  I have been using acrylics, watercolor and then I put in the details with pen or Sharpie. Often, life is explained through stories, and fairy tales are a part of that.

Opposites

Opposites, opposites. I haven't done much photography this year, so I focused on portraiture. Photography is definitely not my strong point, but I had fun attempting this. There is no editing on these photos at all. :D Yes.

Silk Painting

Silk painting silk painting silk painting whoo!
For this project, I would give myself a 3 because;
3A: There is some successful use of the elements of design, but the investigation of their application to 2-D design principles is emerging and narrow in scope
3C: Some imaginative ideas about the use of the elements and principles of design appear to be emerging.
3F: The work is uneven, but overall is demonstrates emerging technical competence and use of materials and media.
Silk painting is pretty fun. It's very different from the medias that I normally work this. Even though I liked this project a lot, I feel that I did not push myself, necessarily. I'm glad that it turned out relatively well, since I used so much resist. It would have been quite simple to add so many more colors to this piece, which is something I wish I had done. But overall, I liked this project!

Dushanbe & BMOCA Field Trip Stuff

A lovely sketch of Pearl Street, minus all the people. The scan is a tad odd up at the top. I'll redo it later, but for now, it will have to do. Boulder is a lovely city.

Weekly Challenge No.5: FOOD

I painted some blueberries on a manila folder, y'all!  This is a partial scan, just because the whole folder couldn't fit. Acrylics. Blueberries are great- they're just so blue. How many blue foods are there, really? They're pretty cool.

Unedited Pantones Series

So this is my series. I did four, but the last one just isn't very strong. I used Pantone consecutive paint chips and acrylic paint. I would love to put these into Photoshop and even out some of the brushstrokes that show up too strongly, in my opinion. Anywho, I really like working with paint chips as a background.

Weekly Challenge No.4: Portraiture

For this week, I did portraiture, and it was very helpful for English as well. This is Ophelia, one of the characters in Hamlet, which we are reading. She's a very vague character, so all of her lines from the sections that we read are on her face, either as a mask or because she lacks personality. I had a lot of fun experimenting with profiles, and hair is fun to draw! For this one, I used a regular black ballpoint pen.

20 Layers

Yeah 20 Layers Project! I started this one on a piece of cardboard. I used a lot of paper from magazines and books, including a layer on top of the cardboard and the flower-y thing on the record. For the transparency, I wrote song lyrics, painted acrylic on the back, and then hung them from the record using wire. I had a lot of fun with this one- even though I had a loose plan, mostly I just kind of went with what came to my head first.

Weekly Challenge No.3: Surrealist Landscape

I read a lot of Dr. Seuss  this weekend. This surrealist landscape piece was done on canvas with ink. I used different shades by watering it down. I used brushes and let it dry in layers for the background. The flower details were done with brushes or a quill pen.

Weekly Challenge No.2

For Weekly Challenge 2, I redid a piece from last year. For that one, I drew a scuba diver (graphite) also on a book page. I guess I really like using book paper. For this one, I again used book paper, and I was very much inspired by the movie UP. This one was done in pen and ink.

Weekly Challenge No.1

I chose to do the artist emulation one. The artist that I picked was Loui Jover. He has taken over the lovely world of Pinterest with his ink drawings on book paper. I have worked with book paper, but usually for mixed media. It was really fun, and for this one I used a picture of my sister Emerson jumping rope. I also added blue, because that was a tad bit more interesting. I also did a bear, because bears are great.

Summer Work No.2

This one was kind of on a whim, because I had this sheet of black paper. And then I found a silver pen. Perfect! Draw a bear! I would love to go back on this one and add some more solid detail to the tree right next to him, and maybe a little bit more in the fur, particularly around the eyes.

Summer Artwork No.1

This is one of the few photographs that I took over the summer (much of my art was fine) while I was in Ohio. It first caught my attention because of the different shades of white, grey and black, and also because of the texture.
